N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine, or NALT for short, is considered to be a modified formulation of a non-essential amino acid. L-Tyrosine is an amino acid that the body is capable of producing internally, but supplementation is often necessary to optimize cognitive function. NALT is modified from normal Tyrosine because it contains the addition of acetic acid. This actually helps to increase the compound’s bioavailability so that it is better absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Acetic acid also has some important benefits in its own right for brain health. For these reasons, this is the optimal form of supplemental L-Tyrosine.
Effects on cognition.
The way in which the NALT actually works within the body is a bit complex and still not fully understood. However, it is clear that NALT is an incredibly strong and bioavailable form of the amino acid Tyrosine. Through an ezymatic process, Tyrosine is converted into a versatile chemical called L-Dopa. This then is used to make Dopamine as well as several other helpful chemicals involved in mental functioning.
One of the things that L-Dopa does is convert into Melanin. This process of conversion forces the removal of things called quinones which can cause neurotoxicity. Additionally, Melanin is a chelating agent within the brain, accumulating and removing harmful metals like mercury and lead. The dopamine which is not used directly for boosting your mood is also turned into Norepinephrine.
Supplementation with NALT can improve our memory formation, learning capacity and general comprehension and analytical skills. Also, many users have reported a feeling of mental energy, focus, and concentration. Others seem to have more clarity and mental fluidity. Not only do these chemicals play an important role in our cognitive processes, they also help with our overall mood. This includes reducing feelings of stress and anxiety and possibly even symptoms of depression.
